Go Girl! Take your medicine!

So my son has been sick recently (cue sad faces).  But he has the absolute best attitude about it, because to him every day is awesome—even when he feels bad.  He has it pretty good. But that’s a topic for another day. The thing is, I was giving him his medicine last night (which, through some miracle of science only discovered after my childhood, apparently tastes delicious—see, I told you life is good for the delightful little monster) and he stopped, mid-dose, looked up at me, spread his fingers wide, clapped his hands together, and said “YAY!”  Then he opened his little mouth for the rest of his medicine.

He was so proud of himself!

He was doing something that he is supposed to do, something that has become routine for us, but he was proud of himself.  Of course, he hears “Yay!” and we clap for him about 118 times a day, so it’s natural that he should do it.

But wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all cheer so valiantly for ourselves when it was time to “take our medicine” or do one of those hundreds of little routine activities that we do every day?

We “adults” do so many things every day that are “expected” or really just baseline (take showers, keep the kids from starving, pay bills, drive to work, leave the house with matching shoes on).

“Yay!!”

Really, yay for us!!!

Because some days just keeping our heads above water feels impossible, right?  Adulting is hard. Being responsible is hard. It is a grind. But we could choose not to do it.  Every day we show up for ourselves, and we should be proud of that. We need to be kinder to ourselves.  I don’t care if you’re doing something that you think someone else could do easily, or you might have done 100 times already, or you think it could be done better (washing dishes, eating healthy, writing an email, not skipping a meal).

Stop whatever it is that you’re doing, clap for yourself, and say “Yay!!”  (Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any weird looks you might receive.)

Don’t you feel better?

You’re getting it done. Whatever it is.

You are here.

You are kicking ass.

You are amazing.

You are getting it done.

Yay for you!!!

Wishing you a few moments of clarity amidst the chaos,
